Sicily Study Abroad Boasting some of the richest history and breathtaking landscapes in the Mediterranean world, Sicily is a land relatively undiscovered by tourists and American universities with study abroad programs. This unique program is not only based in Sicily, but its academic focus is solely on southern Italy, the region referred to as the Mezzogiorno, the land of the midday sun. The program is located in Taormina, a town that has managed to cultivate a cosmopolitan feel while maintaining its medieval charm. Mt. Etna provides a spectacular backdrop for its most famous landmark, the Teatro Greco (“Greek theater”). Of the many charming towns of Sicily, Taormina stands out as the jewel in the island’s crown.

The Institute is open to undergraduate and graduate students and warmly welcomes non-MSU students. Non-students may participate as auditors or for Professional Development Credits. Participants will stay in the President Hotel Splendid*, Sicily Study Abroad a two-star hotel within walking distance of the classrooms. Rooms will be doubles in suites with a shared bathroom and shower (single accommodations are available at extra cost). Continental breakfast and use of the hotel's pool are included in the program cost along with day-long excursions to (1) Piazza Armerina and Agrigento & (2) Palermo and Monreale. A farewell Sicilian dinner is also included.

Some of Sicily's most beautiful beaches are just a short walk and cable car ride away from the hotel. Students may elect to participate in a number of optional excursions and cultural activities, such as films and seminars, at an additional cost. In addition, Taormina's famed summer arts festival offers students the opportunity to attend dance, musical and theater performances against the stunning backdrop of the Teatro Greco. *Please note that the rooms students occupy do not have a view of the sea.
